Nero makes it three in ECU road race

T&T marathon runner Tonya Nero captured her third consecutive 15k title at the 26th annual Eastern Credit United’s (ECU) road race, yesterday.

The race, named after veteran road runner Lynette “Granny” Luces, took place with three races, a 15k, a three-leg 15k relay and a 5k, all of which started simultaneously, at the Arima Velodrome and at St Mary’s Children’s Home.

Nero took her women’s 15k in 58.31, well ahead of Jenelle Nedd (1:01:34) and Gina Hart (1:10:12).

In the men’s open 15k, Richard Jones struck gold in a 50:02 run, while Curtis Cox (51:18) and Lionel Dandrade (52:44) trailed in second and third.

This year’s races saw an influx of over 700 participants as road runners and fitness enthusiasts braved the hot weather.

Other outstanding performers on the day included Kester Joseph (1:08:03), who won the physically challenged 15k and Oswald Adams (1:04.13) and Christine Regis (1:13:07, who won the masters (50-and-over) men and women’s 15k, respectively.
